Images of detained Tibetan artists, writers, and musicians were projected onto the Chinese consulate building to protest China's attack on Tibet's culture as "Tibet Week" opened at the Shanghai Expo. View photos and watch a video.
From September 1st through 5th, the Chinese government is
featuring "Tibet Week" with the theme "Heaven in Tibet" at the Shanghai Expo in an attempt to claim Tibetan culture as its own and
whitewash its abysmal human rights record in Tibet.

On August
17th, Chinese police opened fire on a group of Tibetans protesting the
expansion of a Chinese-owned gold mining operation in Palyul County in eastern Tibet. Four Tibetans were reportedly killed and 30 more injured in the violent attack.

On August 14th, SFT honored a handful of Tibetan heroes by presenting them with the Lhakar Award.
Shogdung was honored for his book, གནམ་ས་གོ་འབྱེད་ (The Line between Sky and Earth), now banned in Tibet. Runggye Adak was honored for his courageous speech of August 1, 2007 at the Lithang Horse Racing festival. Norzin Wangmo and Yeshi Choedon were honored for promoting freedom of information in Tibet. All of these individuals are currently in prison in Tibet or awaiting trial.

Three years after his arrest, footage of Runggye Adak's bold protest speech at the Lithang Horse Racing Festival has been publicly released. Adak is serving an 8-year prison sentence for simply denouncing China's policies in Tibet and calling for the return of the Dalai Lama. Take action for Runggye Adak's release.
